This directory was put together using information from a number of sources to help you identify; what the properties of a stone are, where it is primarily sourced, how rare it is, where to position the stone for maximum effect, and a description of it's appearance and colours. Most of the information for this directory was taken from Judy Hall's "The Crystal Bible" and a more in-depth review of each stone can be found in that book.

AGATE - Comes in many different colours, including clear or white, grey, blue, green, pink, brown and it's often also coloured artificially. Agate is usually banded, and sometimes translucent with small crystals. It has a soft, waxy appearance. It is often sold in artificially coloured slices which have no enhanced healing benefits. A very common stone, found in the USA, India, Africa, Brazil and the Czech Republic.

Agate is a very grounding stone, which helps to encourage balance on an emotional and physical level, it is both calming and soothing but also provides strength. It is said to improve concentration and perception as well as analytical abilities, and encourages truthfulness. Agates containing clear crystals can bring memories to the surface. On an emotional level Agates can help to overcome negativity and bitterness, and can heal anger, and promote feelings of safety and courage by reducing internal tensions. It also encourages spiritual growth and quiet contemplation.

Agate is a strong cleanser and can help to alleviate and alter negative energies, and stabilise your aura*. Placed on the abdomen it can aid the digestive process, as well as healing the stomach, uterus and eyes. It also helps to cleanse the lymph drainage system and the pancreas. It can strengthen blood vessels and skin disorders.

Specific colours also have additional properties: Blue-Green Agate is usually actually glass and therefore has no theraputic properties.

Green Agate can help to resolve disputes, and can improve flexibility both mentally and emotionally, improving decision-making.

Pink Agate when positioned over the heart promotes love between parent and child.

Botswana Agate is strongly linked to fire and smoke. It can help smokers and aid those trying to quit. It helps you explore your creativity, and mentally can help you to see the bigger picture. It can also helps to release repression gently. This agate can look like the brain (being grey and often with nodules), and it resonates with this organ. It can improve depression, as well as the circulatory system and the skin by improving the intake of oxygen. It also stimulates the crown chakra* and draws energy into the aura.

BLUE LACE AGATE - A pale blue stone usually with both darker blue and white veining. It is usually found as quite a small stone, tumbled more often than not, and banded. It's not a rare stone and is commonly found in crystal stores. It is sourced in the same places as AGATE.

This is a very soothing stone, it helps to calm the mind, and has a soft, cooling energy. It's speciality is in facilitating communication of thoughts and feelings as it activates the throat chakra*. It is a very supportive stone and can help to neutralize anger, fever, infection and inflammation. As it unblocks the throat chakra, it is especially beneficial in dissolving feelings of repression, and in promoting self-expression. Many people have feeling of repression, stemming from a fear of judgement in the parent-child relationship, which can lead to a closure of the throat chakra* and feelings of suffocation or tightness in the chest. It can be especially helpful to Men in finding their sensitive side. The peacefulness of this stone counteracts mental stress and can help to dissolve anger.

This release of self-expression can improve shoulder and neck problems, thyroid deficiencies and throat and lymph infections. It can also remove blockages within the nervous system and lower fevers, as well as improving arthritic conditions, strengthening bones and reducing bone deformity and healing fractures. It also aids capillaries and the pancreas. It can also improve the effectiveness of sound therapy, by helping to direct the sound to the relevant area.

DENDRITIC AGATE - A clear, brown and green stone, usually transparent with leaf-like markings, it is usually found as a small, tumbled stone, and is quite common. Found in the same places as AGATE and also in Iceland.

This is a stone of abundance and brings fullness to all areas of life, including agriculture and business. It can improve crop yields and maintain healthy plants in the home. It is a peaceful stone, encouraging you to live more in the moment and enjoy the now, creating a calm environment. It's links to the plant world also encourages your connection to the earth. It can help you to remain calm, and focused, in times of confusion or stress and encourages perserverance. This stone helps to open and align all the chakras*, and is a slow working stone, taking time to be fully effective.

By opening and aligning the chakras, this stone can improve dis-ease* associated with them being out of line. It's branching patterns also cause it to resonate with anything within the body that branches, such as blood vessels and the nervous system, it is therefore good for treating disorders relating to these, improving circulation and healing the nervous system. It can also overcome geopathic stress* or "black ley lines*." Placed on the site of pain it can also provide relief.

Hold or place on the appropriate point and wear for long periods of time to gain the maximum benefits. You can also put it into plant pots to help.

FIRE AGATE - A small stone with lots of swirling and almost luminous colours in red-brown, orange, blue and green. It is a rarer stone, probably available in specialist shops, and is sourced in the same locations as the DENDRITIC AGATE.

This is a powerful stone, providing protection from harm, creating a shield around the body to return harm back to its source. It also has strong grounding powers which are calming, and provide security, safety and support during difficult times, it can also help to dispel fear. It encourages relaxation and enhances meditation.

Physically it aids sexual endeavours (being linked to the fire element) and stimulates the base chakra* and vitality. It also encourages self-evaluation, and can help to remove cravings and destructive tendancies - it can therefore be a good stone to help treat addictions.

This stone can heal the stomach, nervous system, endocrine system and circulatory disorders. It aids eyes, improving night vision, and as it works with the triple-burner meridian* it can be applied to bring it back into harmony, reducing hot flushes and removing heat from the body. The energy it attracts into the body also helps prevent energy burn-out, and when placed on a blown chakra* can bring it back online.

This stone can be worn for long or short periods of time, and placed on the body where required.

MOSS AGATE - Available in green, blue, red, yellow and brown, usually translucent with branched markings, similar to moss and foliage. It is usually a small stone and it quite common. Sourced in the USA, Australia and India.

Moss Agate has a strong link to nature and can help to reduce the effects of extreme weather and environmental pollutants on the body. A particularly relevant stone for anyone in agriculture or working with plants. It is a stone of fresh starts and therefore also assists midwives in reducing labour pains and aiding a smooth delivery. Also a stone of wealth, it attracts abundance, and aids intellectuals to get in touch with their intuition, and vice versa, helps intuitive people to access their intellectual side.

A very good stone for dealing with depression, regardless of the cause it's said to help the sufferer find meaning behind the causes, and it also improves self-esteem generally and enhances positive personality traits. it reduces fear and deep-rooted stress and encourages team-work and an ability to work well with other people. It also inspires new ideas after a period of mental blockage.

Physically it's said to increase recovery times and can be used to counteract long-term illnesses. An anti-inflammatory it cleanses the circulation and elimination systems and boosts the immune systems. It can help to prevent hypoglycemia and dehydration, and treats infections, colds, flu and fevers. As an elixir applied to the skin it can treat fungal and skin infectios.

AMAZONITE - A blue. green stone, usually readily available in a range of sizes, opalescent with veining. Sourced in USA, Russia, Canada, Brazil, India, Mozambique, Namibia and Austria.

Amazonite has a strong filtering effect and can therefore block geopathic stress*, absorb microwaves and mobile phone emanations, and protect against electromagnetic pollution by placing between you and the source, or taping to your mobile. Also a very calming stone, it soothes the brain and nervous system and helps maintain optimal health levels by keeping the physical body aligned with the etheric*. It also soothes emotional trauma, reducing worry and fear, it neutralises aggravation and negative energy. Amazonite is very good for balancing and helps you to see both sides of a problem, as well as balancing out the male and female energies in the personality.

This stone opens and heals both the heart and throat chakras*, encouraging love and communication, and opens the third eye* and intuition. The stone eliminates blockages within the nervous system, and is beneficial for osteoporosis, tooth decay, calcium deficiency and calcium deposits, balancing out the metabolism to help prevent these conditions. It can also relieve muscle spasms. But the major property of this stone is the protection it offers from the health risks of microwaves and electromagnetic smog*.

Hold or place over the relevant area, or wear it to protect against microwaves. Place it between you and the source to absorb radiations.

AMBER - A well known stone available in golden brown or yellow (green is artificially coloured), opaque or transparent in appearance with resin, insects or plant life trapped inside. Easily obtained and sourced in Britain, Poland, Italy, Romania, Russia, Germany, Myanmar and Dominica.

Amber is technically not a crystal, it is a tree resin that solidified and became fossilised, however it has strong connections with the earth and is a grounding stone, and a powerful healer and cleanser, removing dis-ease from the body and cleansing the environment and the chakras*. It absorbs negative energies and turns them into positive forces that the body can use to heal itself, and also a strong protector.

Mentally it encourages stability as well as motivation, stimulates intellect and combats depression, promoting a positive disposition and mental state. It can also facilitate patience, balance, and encourages decision-making, as well as being a useful memory aid. Emotionally it promotes peace and trust.

Amber is a powerful healer and imbues vitality to the body. It can absorb pain and negative energy, and allows the body to rebalance and heal itself. It reduces stress. Physically it resonates with the throat, and can treat the stomach, spleen, kidneys, bladder, liver and gallbladder, aiding joint problems and strengthening mucus membranes.

Wear for long periods of time, especially on the wrist or throat, or place as appropriate. If being used for babies or children, it is usually a good idea for the mother to wear the stone first.

AMETHYST - One of the most common crystals and readily available as geodes, clusters, single points and jewellery. A purple coloured stone sourced in USA, Britain, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Russia, Sri Lanka, Uruguay, East Africa, Siberia and India.

Amethyst is a very powerful stone and one of the best all-rounders. If you're new to crystals and crystal healing, Amethyst is a good stone to start with. It is also a protective stone, it blocks geopathic stress* and negative environment energy. It has strong healing and cleansing powers and, a natural tranquilizer, was traditionally worn to prevent drunkenness and have a restraining effect on overindulgence and physical passions, supporting sobriety.

Amethyst can be both calming and stimulating as required, and is a very useful aid to meditation, helping you to push mundane thoughts away and go deeper. Mentally it encourages focus and control, and facilitates decision-making and promotes common sense. It can also calm the mind and is helpful in the treatment of insomnia caused by an overactive mind, and can help prevent recurrent nightmares. It can enhance memory and improve motivation and helps with the visualisation process.

Amethyst promotes emotional balance, eliminating anger, fear and anxiety, and alleviating sadness and grief - it can be a good stone for grieving as it helps you to come to terms with loss. A very spiritual stone it is great for use with meditation.

Amethyst is said to boost the metabolism, as well as hormone production, and strengthen the cleansing and elimination organs and immune system. It can alleviate pain and stress on all levels, and can aid headaches and release tension. It can reduce bruising and swellings and can treat hearing disorders, as well as dis-eases* of the lungs and respiratory tract. Also a good stone for the intestines. Said to be very beneficial for the treatment of insomnia, encouraging restful sleep.

Amethyst also cleanses the aura*, stimulating the crown and throat chakras*, and creating spiritual connections, it can be helpful for those about to make the transition through death. It can also stabilise psychiatric conditions, but should not be used in cases of paranoia or schizophrenia.

Wear or place as appropriate, especially beneficial when worn as jewellery. Clusters and geodes can also be placed in the environment and single points are often used in healing. Especially helpful worn over the throat or heart, and for insomnia place under the pillow. Please note Amethyst fades in the sunlight.

AMETRINE - An easily obtainable stone, although only sourced from one mine in Bolivia. It is a purple and yellow stone - a transparent combination of Amethyst and Citrine, usually found in relatively small pieces.

Ametrine is a powerful combination of Amethyst and Citrine, a fast and effective healing stone particularly useful for long-standing illness, bringing insight into the possible causes of dis-ease*. This stone releases stress and tension from the head, calms mentally and enhances focus for meditation. It promotes healing and divination, and combines male and female energy. Mentally is encourages compatability and acceptance of others, and helps to overcome prejudices.

Ametrine can promote creativity and encourages you to take control of your life. It combines perception and action, and brings clarity of mind, enhanced concentration and advanced exploration of possibilities to reach creative solutions. Emotionally it can release Negative Emotional Programming*, clear blockages and encourage transformation. It also brings insight into the causes of emotional distress, promoting optimism and a calm well-being, protected from external stresses.

Ametrine is a powerful cleanser, removing negative energies from the aura and eliminating toxins from the body. It energizes and cleanses the blood, strengthening the immune system and oxygenating the body. It can help to treat chronic fatigue syndrome, depression, gastric disturbances and ulcers, fatigue and lethargy, tension headaches and burning sensations. It can release blockages on all levels.

Wear against the skin for long time periods on the solar plexus. Otherwise holding an ametrine can bring hidden/buried issues to the surface so they can be expressed and healed.

ANGELITE - A blue and white stone, occasionally with small pieces of red as well, opaque often with veined markings similar to wings, usually quite a large stone. Easily available and sourced in Britain, Egypt, Germany, Mexico, Peru, Poland and Libya.

This stone represents peace and contact with the angelic realm*, enhancing telepathy and facilitating out-of-body journeys*. A resonant stone for healers, strengthening attunement and increasing perceptive awareness. It is also a strong protector of both the environment and the body. Formed from Celestite the 2 stones share many properties.

Mentally it aids truthful expression, and enhances compassion and acceptance, it can help to eliminate psychological pain and reduce effects of cruelty. It has been known to increase astrological understanding and bring a deeper understanding of mathematics! Spiritually it transmutes pain to create a feeling of peace and tranquility.

Apply to the feet to unblock meridians* and energetic pathways, it also has close links to the throat, regulating the thyroid and parathyroids and soothing inflammation - particularly good for sunburn. It can heal tissues and blood vessels and balance bodily fluids, acting as a diuretic. It can aid weight control, and has strong links to the lungs and arms.

ANHYDRITE - A clear, blue, grey stone with long bladed or short crystals usually found on a matrix. Only obtainable from specialist stores and sourced only in Italy.

Anhydrite provides physical support and strength, encouraging acceptance of the physical body. Very useful for those who struggle with the concept of incarnation, it teaches acceptance of what life has offered you and releases feelings that dwell on the past.

It treats disorders of the throat, especially if caused by a difficulty expressing oneself. It also dissipates excess fluid and swellings.

APATITE - This stone can be found in many colours; yellow, green, grey, blue, white, purple, brown, red-brown and violet. It is usually opaque in appearance with a glassy look and can be found in many sizes, often tumbled. It is sourced in Mexico, Norway, Russia and the USA, the blue is a commonly available stone, whereas the yellows are rare.

Apatite is an inspirational stone, encouraging a humanitarian attitude inclined towards service. It is tuned to the future but also connects to past lives, developing psychic abilities and encouraging deeper meditation. It raises the kundalini* and aids communication and self-expression.

Psychologically it can help increase energy reserves and motivation and promotes openness and social ease, encouraging extroversion and reducing aloofness and alienation. It absorbs negativity about oneself and others, and can be helpful for autistic and hyperactive children. Apatite stimulates creativity and intellect, clearing confusion, and increasing knowledge, truth and relieving sorrow, apathy and anger. It reduces irritability and helps to overcome emotional exhaustion, and can clear frustration and endorse passion without guilt by releasing energy in the base chakra.

Apatite is a strong healer of bones and promotes new cell formation, it aids absorption of calcium and helps cartilage, bones, teeth and motor skills, as well as reducing symptoms of arthiritis, joint problems and rickets. This stone suppresses hunger and raises the metabolic rate, encouraging a healthy diet. It can also overcome hypertension, heal the glands, meridians and organs. It balances the body and the chakras*, regulating energy levels, and when used alongside other crystals it facilitates results.

In addition to the generic properties these colours also have additional properties:

Blue - facilitates communication, both in a group and with public speaking, by opening the throat chakra. It also heals the heart and emotional dis-ease*, and brings a high level of spiritual guidance.

Yellow - A great detoxifier, it activates the solar plexus and draws off stagnant energy. It can treat CFS*, lethargy and depression and enhance concentration, learning skills and digestion. It removes cellulite and treats the liver, gallbladder, pancreas and spleen. Emotionally it can neutralise stored anger, and taken as an elixir can be an appetite suppresant.

APOPHYLITE - Can be found in clear, white, green, yellow and peach, usually with cubic or pyramidal crystals which may be transparent or opaque, and can be found in small single clusters and large clusters. A readily available stone sourced in Britain, Australia, India, Brazil, Czech Republic and Italy.

A very efficient conductor of energy due to it's high water content, and a carrier of the Akashic record*. Placed in a room it enhances the energies, acting as a powerful vibrational transmitter. Quite a spiritual stone it creates a strong connection to the spiritual realm and enhances intuition. It encourges deeper self-examination and the correction of imbalances and flaws that are percieved, a stone of truth it breaks through pretence and reserve, allowing you to show your true self to the world.

Mentally it is a calming stone, reducing stress and negative thought patterns, it can also reduce desire. It releases stored emotions, and can help to overcome anxiety, worry and fear, apprehension and uncertainty.

Regarded as THE stone to assist Reiki healing, it allows the patient to move into a state of deep relaxation and receptiveness, as well as removing the healer from the energy path allowing purer energy to be received by the patient. A good stone for the respiratory system, it can help to reduce or stop an asthma attack when held to the chest. It neutralises allergies and promotes regeneration of the skin and mucus membranes. When a crystal is placed on each eye, it rejuvenates them, and is especially useful as a spiritual healer.

Pyramids can be placed on the third eye when meditating or channeling, otherwise place as appropriate.

Green - Promotes a forthright heart in decisions of the heart and activates the heart chakra*. It absorbs and transmits universal energy, allowing absorption of it. It can also help those undertaking fire walking as it facilitates meditation and cools the feet afterwards, and it releases hypnotic commands* and control mechanisms from past or present lives.

Pyramids - These are powerful energizers, increasing spiritual vision and opening the third eye. As with all pyramids they are preservers and can be used to charge objects and other crystals.

AQUAMARINE - A green-blue stone, commonly available, a clear to opaque crystal, usually small and either tumbled or faceted. It can be sourced in USA, Mexico, Russia, Brazil, India, Ireland, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Known as a stone of courage. It calms the mind, reduces stress and controls energies, harmonising it's environment and protecting from pollutants. In the past it was carried by sailors as a talisman against drowning.

Aquamarine has an affinity with sensitive people, encouraging tolerance, reducing judgemental tendancies and supporting those overwhelmed by responsibilties. It encourages you to take responsibility for yourself, and create a personality that is dynamic and persistent, as well as breaking old self-defeating programs.

It increases understanding, increasing perception and intellect, and calming the mind. It will help to close unfinished business, and is good for closure on many levels. It encourages self-expression and helps to understand how you feel and hidden emotional states. It calms fears and encourages sensitivity.

Spiritually it enhances intuition, a great stone for meditative work, encouraging a high state of spiritual awareness. It can shield the aura* and align the chakras*, and aid communication by clearing the throat chakra*.

Very useful for sore throats, swollen glands and thyroid problems, it regulates hormones and growth and harmonises the pituitary and thyroid. It has a beneficial impact on the cleansing organs, the eyes, jaw, teeth and stomach, useful for aiding short or long-sightedness, and overreactions of the immune system and autoimmune diseases (ie. hay fever).

Can be placed over the eyes or used as an elixir, or simply placed on the body as appropriate.

ARAGONITE - Found in white, gold, green, yellow, blue and brown, in several forms, usually small. It has a chalky texture, or is translucent, and has distinct protrusions like little sputniks. It is easily obtained and sourced in Namibia, Britain and Spain.

A very grounding stone, and reliable earth healer, it encourages conservation and recycling. Aragonite can transform geopathic stress* and clear blocked ley lines* even from a distance. Very useful in times of stress, it stabilises the base and earth chakras*. It can also encourage gentle childhood, or past-life, exploration.

Psychologically it encourages patience and acceptance and combats oversensitivity. It aids people in delegation, promoting discipline and reliability. It aids concentration on present matters and encourages flexibility and tolerance, bringing insight into the cause of problems. Emotionally it can alleviate anger and emotional stress, providing strength and support.

Physically Aragonite is a stone that will make you feel well and comfortable in your own body, battling dis-ease*, and calming inner unrest, reducing twitching and spasms. It can stabilise you and aid in grounding and centering the body. Spiritually it also stabilises development that may be out of control, calming and centering, introducing balance it increases vibrations in preparation for meditation and brings energy into the body.

Aragonite draws energy through the body, warming extremeties, treating chills and Reynaud's Disease. It can heal bones, increase calcium absorption, and restore elasticity to discs. It can disperse pain and prevent night twitching and spasms. It strengthens immunity and calms processes that are proceeding too quickly. It can also be placed on a map to heal stress lines in the earth.

Hold or place over the affected area, or bathe with an elixir, to combat restless sleep place under pillow. Can be worn as a pendant for grounding, and makes a useful hand comforter.
